It was a pleasure to discover that Mr. Atkinson wrote about the Pawlet Expedition of 1777, pages 210 and 211 in his Volume Two of The Revolutionary Trilogy.
He also references Hoyt’s “The Pawlet Expedition, September 1777” Vermont History, Vol. 75, no 2 (Summer-Fall 2007) 69+ on page 807 under Sources in his book.
I spoke with Mr. Atkinson after the lecture, also to get my book signed, regarding the Pawlet Expedition. He noted that the expedition disrupted Burgoyne’s’ supply lines and ultimately his retreat north. Atkinson also noted that Gates summoned Major General Benjamin Lincoln’s men at Pawlet, which were an additional fighting force, adding to Gate’s existing men at Saratoga. Saratoga was the first big win for the Americans and ultimately convinced the French to join our side.
The town of Pawlet should have a monument that clearly pays honor to the men who helped win our victory at the battle of Saratoga!
